Antisana Reserve & Papallacta Pass
With an early morning departure from Quito to Papallacta, we will make several stops on the way to our 4-5 hour bird watching tour. Stopping at midday at Guango Lodge to check the hummingbird feeders and enjoy lunch before continuing the bird watching throughout the afternoon. Returning to Quito in the evening.
Birds we might discover: The altitude of the Papallacta Pass gives a good chance to see the threatened Andean Condor which nests in the surrounding cliffs. Other birds of prey regularly seen there include the endemic Carunculated Caracara, the spectacular Black-chested Buzzard Eagle and the Variable Hawk. Rufous-bellied Seedsnipe is present as well as Curve-billed Tinamou. Furnarids are abundant as well as Canasteros and Spinetails. The main attraction in Guango is the amazing abundance and great diversity of hummingbirds.
The amazing Sword-billed Hummingbirds are a crowd favourite and species like the rare Gorgeted Woodstar, Long-tailed Sylph, Mountain Velvetbreast, Tourmaline Sunangel and Mountain Avocetbill are also a delight. Torrent Ducks play in the river that crosses the lodge’s area, and Grey-breasted Mountain Toucan and the rare Dusky Piha are often spotted as well.
