Visit to Seymour Island
North Seymour Island is a small landmass located an hour away from the Itabaca Channel on the northern side of Santa Cruz. This rocky island is home to one of the most impressive colonies of various animal species. As you explore the island, you’ll encounter giant frigatebirds, which spend hours passing nesting material back and forth to one another during courtship. In the surrounding area, you’ll encounter some blue-footed boobies, which scavenge the ground and occasionally carry twigs, though they never actually build a nest. The area where the eggs are laid is marked by a ring of white guano. As you walk along the coast, you’ll cross a vast sandy expanse crisscrossed by marine iguana tracks. These reptiles nest here, so watch your step. Some of the island’s most beautiful waves break to your left on a rocky beach; young sea lions often surf the waves here. Looking west, you’ll have a good view of the two Daphne Islands, Major and Minor.
Visit to Plaza Sur Island
After a delicious lunch aboard the Windrose yacht, we’ll head to South Plaza Island, a beautiful island teeming with wildlife and birdlife, including swallow-tailed gulls, lava gulls, frigatebirds, masked boobies, blue-footed boobies, pelicans, and red-billed tropicbirds. It’s not hard to come across a gull’s nest and see some chicks flapping their wings and trying to fly. South Plaza Island was formed by lava that lifted the seabed and is countless years old. Since its formation, the wildlife and diverse plant life have gradually settled on the island. Visitors to the island will find that the steep, sloping cliffs are home to an astonishing variety of birds and that large colonies of sea lions and other marine animals also live here.
