Arrival in Quito

Welcome to Quito! The biggest, best-preserved colonial city of America was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978. The city is considered the Cultural Capital of South America and the second most important city of the old Inca Empire. Depending on arrival time, you can spend your day exploring the old town of Quito and the surrounding area. In the evening, one of our trip leaders will meet you at the hotel for a welcome briefing and there will be plenty of time to discuss details and answer any questions you may have regarding the adventure. Our first day is an informational and acclimation day.

Biking to the cloud forest of Mindo

Our adventure begins driving down to the western part of Pichincha volcano, to the old road that connects the highlands with the cost. We will hop on our bikes starting at about 11000ft (3300mt), cycling mostly downhill to the amazing valley of Tandayapa, where the tropical forest is packed with birdlife including toucans and hummingbirds, many varieties of butterflies and lots of orchids. We will experience an incredible change of temperature along the way. In the afternoon we will visit the chocolate factory of Mindo.

Biking into Pululahua inhabited crater

In the morning we will bike into the Pululahua crater; this is one of the very few volcanoes in the world with an inhabited crater “caldera”. The first part of the biking will be on the road from Yunguilla to the Pululahua Geobotanical reserve. The reserve is geologically unique and presents a great eco-diversity with more than 2000 species of flora and several species of fauna. As we descend, we will have an amazing view of the crater valley; later, we will continue on the single track to Infiernillo. In the afternoon we will be transfered to the town of Tababela where we will spend the night.

Quito - Loma archeological site

After breakfast we drive to El Quinche, a little town located east of Quito. We will take a very nice road to the highest part of the mountain, where we are going to visit Quito-Loma, an important pre-Inca archeological site. After a short visit to the ruins, we start our biking adventure on a spectacular scenic path. If the weather conditions are good, we have the chance to admire the great Cayambe volcano, third highest volcano in Ecuador. After 2 hours on our bicycles, we will have our lunch break. In the afternoon, our last 30 minutes ride will take us to the Quitsato equator monument close to the town of Cayambe, where we will discover more about the equator line and local pre-Inca cultures.

Accommodation: Hacienda San Luis or similar Meals included: Breakfast and box lunch

Day 5

Cayambe Volcano - Ecuadors third highest Peak

After leaving the hacienda, we will drive you up to the Cayambe-Coca Eco Reserve. It is going to take us 2 hour to reach the beginning of the glacier of Cayambe volcano at 15,000ft (4500mt). This is the only volcano on earth whose summit is crossed by the equator line and the only snow-capped mountain directly on the equator. We will start our adventure biking down the slopes of this magical mountain to reach the middle of the inter-Andean valleys. Meanwhile you can enjoy outstanding views and look out for wildlife such as: Andean condors, buzzer eagles, hawks, wild horses, Andean fox and the shy Andean bear. Later in the afternoon, we will be transferred to the slopes of Imbabura volcano to enjoy a cultural encounter with local people and learn their traditional way of living.
