Your Travel Experience with Galapagos PRO
Papallacta and Tena
After breakfast, pack your travel buddies in to the car and make your way to Papallacta. Through vegetation that constantly changes, this drive is absolutely breath taking. After about 1.5 hours, you will arrive at a high plateau with the enchanting hot springs of Papallacta at 3,800 meters. Take a dip in the hot springs and enjoy lunch in the restaurant before continuing your journey to Tena (about 2.5 hours). Your Amazon Lodge, Hakuna Matata, is wildly romantic and locates just outside Tena on a river in the middle of nature.
On the second day you can explore the area surrounding the lodge. An extensive walk along the river reveals the lush nature of the Amazon. After a late breakfast, drive on to Misualhi and visit a cocoa plantation. In the afternoon, drive back to Tena and visit the chocolate producer Pacari. Here you can taste the delicious cocoa. In the evening you can enjoy the fantastic restaurant of the rainforest lodge.
Continue your journey to Puyo, a lively town in the Amazon Delta and meet with the shaman Tzama. With him, you will experience the magic of the indigenous people. He will carry out a cleansing ritual with you and take you on a night walk. You'll stay at the Kindi Wasi (or similar lodge) in the rainforest.
Baños and volcano Tungurahua
From Puyo, drive along the River Pastaza to Baños at the foot of Tungurahua. Stop at a large waterfall and walk about 15 minutes to a fantastic lookout. Baños is a lively town and certainly worth your precious time. There are various delicacies to taste, made from sugar cane. Stay at the Hotel La Posada del Arte (or similar). It is quite possible that you will see and hear the Tungurahua, because it is an active volcano which regularly spits since 1998, although this poses no danger to you and your family. An incredible natural drama.
Avenue of Volcanoes
The next day you drive back from Baños to Quito along the Avenue of Volcanoes. Stop in Ambato and eat guinea pigs from the grill - Ecuador's national dish. The large market in Latacunga is your next stop and afterwards you will have a look around the Hacienda La Cienega, lying at the foot of the Cotopaxi, where Alexander Humboldt briefly lived. The Cotopaxi is the highest active volcano in the world. When the national park is open, drive up to the hut and from there you can take a small hike.
Arrive back in Quito in the early evening.
