Day 1

Flight to Coca

Depart Quito Airport for a 30 minute flight over the Andes Mountains leads you to the bustling oil town Coca, located in the Amazon Basin.

Transfer to Sacha Lodge

In Coca you will be picked up by your guide and taken by bus to the dock. From here, a motorised, covered canoe will take you down the river for about two and a half hours.

Although the Rio Napo is up to a kilometer wide in some places, it is often surprisingly flat. On the banks of the river live the Quichua communities. Traditionally, their thatched houses are built on stilts and surrounded by small gardens or "chacras", where they grow coffee, bananas and yuca, among other things. In recent years, huge oil reserves have been discovered in this region, and drilling along the river has become a common sight. Your guide will give you a detailed description of the area and will be available to answer any questions you may have.

Once ashore, take a short hike. First, follow a path beside the river and then wander over bridges through a flooded forest of palm trees. Gigantic, bright blue butterflies, blue- and yellow-tailed macaws, as well as monkeys are regularly seen here.

Night Hike through the Rainforest

After dinner, accompany your naturalist guide on a night walk through the rainforest to view the hundreds of different species of animals that can only be found at night. The atmosphere of the rainforest is completely different by night and offers a treat for the senses - new smells, sounds and animals to discover.

Day 2

Canopy Walk

Morning: Down an early morning coffee in time to join the 6am dawn tour through the rainforest. It is not only cool at this time, but the animals and birds are most active in the mornings soft light.

After lunch you have the opportunity to discover the rainforest from another point of view. The treetops were made accessible with the help of an observation tower, where you can see the jungle extending from there in all directions. On a clear day, you can see the sometimes snowy summit of Sumaco, an extinct volcano. From this observation tower you can study flora and fauna that is not visible from the ground. Water-filled bromeliads stand side by side with orchids, and among them are numerous tropical birds with exotic names such as paradise managers, ornamental birds and the aracari. Being surrounded by such beauty and diversity is a rare and unique experience.

Afternoon: After lunch, you may choose to take a leisurely hike along the Rio Napo, or choose a little more challenging hike on the trail Leoncillo, to try and spot the elusive dusky titi monkey. You will have the opportunity for another canoe ride on the way back to the lodge

Day 3

Lagartococha Trail

Morning: The Lagartococha trail offers you the chance to learn more about the native people and their relationship with the forest. After arriving at lake Lagartococha, take a tranquil canoe ride through a natural swamp, which is the home of anacondas, caimans, and capybaras. After the canoe ride, a walk on the other side of Largatococha may give you the opportunity to spot capuchin or squirrel monkeys, playfully jumping through the trees. These waters are home to many creatures such us caimans, electric eels and giant otters, among others.

Canoe ride

Afternoon: A silent canoe ride through the flooded Amazonian forest. There you have a good chance of being surrounded by troops of squirrel, capuchin and howler monkeys. Keep your eyes peeled for the shy and elusive river otter as well as the incredibly well camouflaged three-toed sloth!

Day 4

Departure from the lodge

Morning: Breakfast and a departure from the lodge at 07:30 am. One last walk on the boardwalk to the river, and from there a two hour canoe ride back to Coca.
