Day 1

Arrival in Quito

Welcome to Quito! The biggest, best-preserved colonial city of America was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978. The city is considered the Cultural Capital of South America and the second most important city of the old Inca Empire. Depending on arrival time, you can spend your day exploring the town of Quito and the surrounding area. In the evening, your tour leader will meet you at the hotel for a welcome briefing and there will be plenty of time to discuss details and answer any questions you may have regarding the adventure. Your first day is an informational and acclimation day.

Day 2

Transportation to Shell and flight to the Huaorani Territory

Early in the morning you will be transferred by car to the airport in Shell, and then take a flight of about 1 hour to Bohanamo in the Huaorani territory, here you will be welcomed by one of the most remote tribes of the Amazon region. Organise your campsite and later visit the chief of this community.

Day 3

Clay lick and piranha fishing

Today is a very important highlight of this expedition because your local guide will lead a hike into the primary forest. This trail will take you to the animal clay lick, where, with some luck, you can follow wild pigs, howler monkeys, macaws, and jaguar tracks. Along the trail you will learn about many different species of medicinal plants which are very important in the daily life of the Huaoranies. In the afternoon you will learn about the arts of blowgun hunting and then try to catch piranhas in the nearby river.

Day 4

Anaconda Lagoon and trip to the Bameno community

After a very healthy breakfast you will take a 2 hour motorized canoe trip down the Cononaco River. Hike through the primary forest until you reach an amazing lagoon. Here you paddle in a small boat trying to find the amazing anacondas. In the afternoon you go back up the river to Bameno for lunch and visit Kempery, the legendary shaman and leader of the Huaoranies. Later on you arrive at the Bohanamo Huaorani Community. After night falls you will go for a guided night hike exploration.

Day 5

Following the Jaguar tracks

Today you will hike through the jungle with the Huaorani warriors and learn more about their survival skills. You will have the chance to view wildlife and also follow the jaguar tracks, according to the Huaoranies the big cat stalks along these trails. In the late afternoon you will go for a search for caimans.

Day 6

Flight back to Quito

After breakfast you will take the plane to Shell and then be transferd back by car to Quito. On the way it is optional to stop in Baños to see the most impressive waterfalls of Ecuador.
