Cotopaxi National Park and Limpiopungo
Your journey along the famous Avenue of Volcanoes begins early in the morning in Quito. Cotopaxi National Park and the Limpiopungo lagoon will be your first port of call. Cotopaxi is the highest active volcano in the world - we recommend enjoying the breathtaking panorama during an easy walk through this incredible national park.
Overnight in the 3* Cuello de Luna in the Cotopaxi National Park (or equivalent).
Hike at the volcano Chimborazo
Your first stop today is the gorgeous Quilotoa Lagoon. Take a short hike around the caledra with a view over the sparkling lagoon below. We recommend wearing solid hiking shoes today if you wish to make the descent to the shores of the beautiful lagoon. It is possible to take a mule ride back to the top afterwards for around $1.
Afterwards, continue south to Chimborazo, Ecuador's highest mountain. A walk at the foot of the majestic extinct volcano, Chimborazo, reveals a magnificent view of the mountain's summit. Chimborazo is known to have fascinated the famous natural scientist Alexander von Humboldt over 200 years ago.
Overnight in the 3* Chimborazo Lodge.
Visit the city of Cuenca
After breakfast, drive south to the train station in Alausi. From the train station, take the Andean Railway along the Devil's Nose - locally knows as Nariz del Diablo. Zigzagging downhill and uphill again, revealing enchanting and impressive landscapes.
The construction of a railway in this landscape is truly a magnificent feat of human technology and we are fortunate to have the opportunity to see such a dramatic, breathtaking landscape.
Afterwards, continue south along the Pacific coast towards Guayaquil. Pay attention to the changing vegetation, marking the changes in the climate zones throughout your drive. Stop in a Banana Plantation and a Cacao Plantation on the way to learn more about Ecuador's agriculture.
