Your Travel Experience with Galapagos PRO

Cotopaxi National Park and Hacienda Cienega

The group will get an early morning start on the drive 80 kilometers south to the Cotopaxi National Park.

Depending on the week day, the first stop is a visit to one of the great indigenous markets of the region - Pujilí, Saliciquí, Ambato or Latacunga. After this quintessential Ecuadorean experience, you will drive to the Cotopaxi National Park.

Awakening in August 2015, Cotopaxi is one of the world's highest active volcanoes. Take a beautiful hike to a viewpoint overlooking the volcano as it spits ash. In good visibility conditions, this is a magical experience. In some cases, your guide may take you to Cotopaxi before the market so as to catch the best weather and visibility conditions.

At lunchtime, drive to the Hacienda Cienega, known for inspiring the great natural scientist, Alexander von Humboldt. The hacienda holds the secrets of historical events to this day, and offers lunch and a collection wonderful stories to curious travelers. The hacienda's gardens are an attraction unto themselves and we highly recommend exploring these during your trip. Alternatively, visit Hacienda San Agustín de Callo, built amongst Incan ruins where you can marvel at the masonry of the building's original Inca walls. If you like, we also visit a nursery for roses right next to the hacienda. Roses are one of the biggest export goods of Ecuador.

In the early evening, catch the sunset over the magnificent landscape as you return to Quito.
