If you want to discover one of the most authentic markets in Ecuador, you can visit the Thursday market in Guamote, located in the south of Riobamba. Every Thursday, the streets and squares of the small town are filled with life and there is a colorful hustle and bustle of the many indigenous people with their colorful ponchos and typical hats. The locals come here to buy or sell sheep, pigs, cattle, fruits, grain, handicrafts, clothes and tools. The market in Guamote is one of the few markets in the country that still engage in countertrade. Stroll along the many booths, try some exotic fruit and purchase souvenirs.
The market only takes place on Thursdays.
