Scalesia forests restoration

Today you will visit the various projects of the Charles Darwin Fundation on Santa Cruz and get to know the Charles Darwin Station.

You will be accompanied by the scientist Heinke Jäger or her colleagues. They are in charge of several projects relating to invasive plant and animal species.

Scalesia forests once thrived on the Galapagos Islands, providing a unique humid ecosystem for plants, insects, giant tortoises and birds. Today, only 1% of the forests' original range remains and several endemic species, including the Scalesia itself, are struggling to survive.

You will visit the Scalesia reforestation project in the Gemelos region and a land bird conservation project.

After lunch on one of the turtle ranches in the highlands, you will visit the Charles Darwin Station in Puerto Ayora.

Charles Darwin Station

The Charles Darwin Foundation and its research station are the largest and oldest scientific and conservation organization in Galapagos. Their research preserves the unique biodiversity of the islands. Since its opening in 1964, the station has been the central location for research on the Galapagos Islands.

The station's team invites you to an exclusive presentation of the work carried out in the Galapagos.
