The Sulphur mines
In the center of the southern part of Isabela Island are the sulfur mines. You start your tour in Puerto Villamil and reach the checkpoint "El Cura" after a 45 minute drive. From here you will go by car to the edge of the cauldron. The rest of the way down to the caldera will be done on foot. During the rainy season, the Sierra Negra volcano, which lies to the east of the sulfur mines, is covered with fog. This reduces visibility considerably and you will not be able to see much. In summer you will have an additional fantastic view of the Sierra Negra volcano.
Attention: This tour is not suitable if you suffer from knee, back, hip or lung problems (due to the sulfur fumes)! There are passages of about 15 minutes, some of which are very steep downhill or uphill! The pace of the excursion is tight and subject to the predetermined schedule of the national park.
