Ruins of Ingapirca
Ingapirca, a Kichwa word meaning "wall of the Incas", is undoubtedly Ecuador's most important pre-Columbian archaeological site. It houses the best-preserved Inca architectural complex in the country and includes a sun temple, an astronomical observatory, storage rooms, ritual baths, burial grounds, streets and plazas.
Known as "Hatun Kañar" ("Great Kañar"), it was not only the capital of the Kañari culture, but also an important place of worship that united different cultures. With the later conquest by the Incas, it became a symbol of their power, just like Machu Picchu. The Incas built an important religious, scientific and administrative centre here, with the Temple of the Sun at its core.
The buildings of the fortress are oriented towards the sun, which is why the light illuminates every corner. In mid-June, at the time of the winter solstice, the traditional "Inti Raymi" ("Festival of the Sun") in honour of the sun god Inti takes place around the ceremonial square, then as now. Surrounded by a unique natural landscape, people celebrate with folkloric dances and Andean music, as well as gastronomic and handicraft specialities.
