Located right in the heart of Guayaquil, at the corner of Panamá and Imbabura streets, the National Cacao Museum (Museo Nacional del Cacao) offers a historic atmosphere. The museum is housed in the historic Casa Guzmán–Aspiazu—a magnificent building whose history is closely tied to Guayaquil’s cacao culture. If you’re staying at the DoubleTree Hotel, the museum is just a one-minute walk away on the next parallel street.
Did you know that the birthplace of chocolate is in Ecuador? While other regions were long suspected, scientific findings now confirm that cacao has a history spanning over 5,000 years along the equator. The National Cacao Museum invites you to experience the journey of Theobroma cacao—the “food of the gods”—from its origins to its global success. From Tuesday to Sunday (10 a.m. to 5 p.m.), you can learn all about the history and the cultural, social, and economic significance of cacao for Ecuador in the museum’s interactive exhibits.
The museum offers audio guides in German, English, French, and Spanish. Guided tours are also available in English and Spanish, and in German depending on availability (we recommend reserving German tours in advance).
