Drive north over the Equator Line to Otavalo to find the most famous artisans of South America. On Saturdays, the whole city is transformed into a single market - livestock, fruit and vegetables, food and crafts. During the week, the poncho market in the main square is the crowd favourite. Just before Otavalo you can enjoy the magnificent view of the Imbabura Volcano which lies at the foot of Ecuador's largest lake, the Lago San Pablo.
In the afternoon we visit Cotacachi, famous for its leather products, and the lake Cuicocha. Laying at an altitude of 3,000 meters, Cuicocha is considered one of Ecuador's most beautiful lagoons and can be circumnavigated within a four- to five-hour hike. Those who prefer not to walk can enjoy the serene lake on a half-hour boat ride.
The incomparable beauty of the landscape is underlined by its rich flora and fauna. More than 400 plant species grow and thrive in the lava enriched soil of the area around Lake Cuicocha. Ten different species of orchids adorn the path, towered over by red cedars, bamboo, rosewood and myrtle, all thriving on the fertile soil.
At the end of the tour, we return to Quito.
