Day 1
Ollantaytambo – Machu Picchu
In the morning, you will go to Ollantaytambo train station. Here you board the train, which takes you past small villages and through the beautiful landscape of the Urubamba Valley to Aguas Calientes. Once at the train station, you will walk a short distance to the bus station, from where a shuttle bus will take you up the serpentine road to the most fantastic ruins in South America in around 20 minutes. Machu Picchu, the "lost city of the Incas", was built in the 15th century at an altitude of 2,430 m on a mountain ridge and was only rediscovered in 1911 by the American explorer Hiram Bingham. After a detailed tour of the various areas with temples and terraces, you will take the shuttle bus back to Aguas Calientes.
Day 2
Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu Ruinen - Cusco
Today you have the opportunity to explore Machu Picchu once again on your own (without a tour guide). We recommend having breakfast early and taking the shuttle bus up to the ruins straight afterwards. With a bit of luck, you will be able to explore Machu Picchu before the first tourists arrive by train from Cusco or Ollantaytambo. For the more ambitious, we recommend climbing Huayna Picchu (tickets must be purchased in advance). Or you can walk to the Inti Punko Sun Gate, a former checkpoint from where you can enjoy a magnificent view of Machu Picchu. In the afternoon, take the shuttle bus back to Aguas Calientes to catch your train back to Poroy or Oallantaytambo. You will be met at the train station and taken to your hotel in Cusco.
